Why do some people call it "pot"?

to me that word always gave the connotation that the person was going to talk about it like it's a joke to your face, and then when your back is turned quietly try to ruin your life by getting you fired and calling the police. As opposed to marijuana, which sounds a little bit more like something people could mind their own damn business about. Any thoughts?
